Chief Justice John Roberts is working overtime to convince the public that the Supreme Court is a paragon of judicial independence. Forgive us for rolling our eyes.
The Chief Justice lives in the same world we all occupy. He can see the chaos, feel the rising anger unleashed upon us all by extra constitutional overreach. He seems stranded between his rational self and his dream of a unitary executive. He needs to reign in Alito and Thomas and stop Trump now, with his next act. With every act that follows. Tut-tutting the populace is inadequate. Presidents are not meant to be all powerful. They aren’t supposed to legislate, and they are required to obey the law. If saying that out loud when it matters undermines your arguments about presidential power in the abstract, then concede the point and save the nation from generational harm.
